The Job Ads are not the labour market!
There's more to the labour market than Job Ads!
The labour market is made up of professional opportunities that have already been identified, declared and described by a company (job ads) but there’s a lot more to it:
a company might also have a person that has to be replaced within a short period of time because of people retiring, moving to different offices, going on maternity leave or because of a change of strategy and this represents an opportunity
a company may have planned the launch of a new product or the opening of a new market or new retail stores. These are work opportunities that people in the company will be aware of before the market finds out
the world evolves and companies need new skills. People in the company will also be aware of this before the market finds out.
A company might approach the market for the above requirements by publishing an ad but it may also decide not to do this and may not even appoint a recruitment company – not in the short term at least.
How does the company interact with the labour market – i.e. who does the demand for work emerge?
Firstly, as has always been the case in the world amongst people this happens by talking about it. A manager will ask his reports, the treasurer will ask the banks he works with, someone working in admin will ask his accountants or labour consultants, an MD will ask his friends at the local club. In other words work opportunities also revolve around personal contacts and it is only at the end that companies use ads or a recruitment company.
This is good news because it means that even if there isn’t an ad for you it doesn’t mean that there isn’t a job for you.
It’s just about knowing how to find it ….
