To all the young men and women out there: don't leave Italy! Look for work here first
In recent months I’ve found myself working more and more frequently with young men and women: graduates or people who recently finished their degrees and are trying to find their footing in the labour market.
These are generally good and hard-working kids … Graduates with degrees ranging from engineering to philosophy, there are Italians and Europeans, some are single but others are married and have kids, all of them are aged between 25 and 35. They are people who come from a good background, who live in Milan, who have done well at university and have good contacts … but nevertheless they are “struggling”. Aside from organising the occasional Open Day, education hasn’t taught them to look for a job, their parents come from a different era and, if they were in their children’s situation, they too would struggle…
So, it’s good to know that there are services such as those provided by GoodGoing! which can help these young man and women and offer them some guidance:
finish university or focus on working
do a masters at University or start working
what job they should accept when they start doing interviews
how to increase their exposure to the labour market
determine how to improve certain skills, especially language skills, and particularly English
understand what they might be good at
find a common thread between various experiences, which can often seem entirely random
...
If they are smart, they won’t need a long period of career coaching. But I assure you, kids can really get a lot out of it: speaking to people with experience of the labour market in a professional manner who are focused on them is a nice surprise!
There are job agencies, job ads and that’s about it.
GoodGoing! is an oasis in the desert. I say this based on the feedback we have received from young men and women we might only have had a single meeting with.
So, if you are a mother, father, family member or friend of a young person, don’t just suggest they go abroad. They can try to find their way in Italy and if that doesn’t work out there’s always time to look to Europe or the rest of the world. Give me a call, send me an email or write a comment!
I look forward to hearing from you!
