Is it time to change jobs?

Check List

Every now and again you may wonder whether it’s time to change jobs and look around the market. I recently got a call from a person I know and respect on a personal and professional level who thinks that after 5 years in a specific job - in which she also happens to have been very successful and have worked very hard - it’s time for a change. That might mean moving to Milan (if you live elsewhere ), looking for a bigger company, or doing precisely the opposite…

Even though summer is getting closer it’s normal to have these thoughts and you might as well elaborate on them since you’ll have more time for yourself during the summer months, with holidays, long weekends and longer days.

It’s better to think calmly about things now so that you can start off the year in September  (which is the start of the working year!) with a clear objective and a plan.

A checklist!?

I found a checklist I’d like to share with you.

Questions to ask yourself before looking for a new job (82 kb.) (82 kb.)

Looking for a job nowadays is no trifling matter (assuming it ever was…).

Aside from objectives and skills/experience to put forward, you also need to have a little “toolbox” available.

1) Do you know how to look for a job? It’s not enough to have a CV in a European template with four things on it and respond to some ads… It’s also not sufficient to simply have a LinkedIn profile. There’s a lot more work to do.

2) Is your objective realistic and suitable in terms of your skills and aptitudes?

3) Do you know how to prepare for an interview? Just being yourself is not the right answer, I’m afraid.

4) Do you know how to write a CV and a covering letter?

5) What about a LinkedIn profile? Simply having one isn’t sufficient, you need to do things properly.

6) Do you have the determination to really pursue your goal once you have identified it or are you someone who gets discouraged easily?

7) And what if they kick you out of your current job? Do you know what to do, how to react, how to negotiate?

In other words, it’s best to do your homework! In this blog you’ll find many posts that provide answers to these questions. You can also ask us for tailor-made support, which will prove invaluable!
