How can your father help your search for a new job?
In Italy, even in a time such as this when it is particularly hard for young people to find work, there are people out there who want their children to fend for themselves for “moral” reasons.
As a favour, a client of mine asked me some time ago if I could take a look at his daughter's CV, a fresh graduate who had recently returned from the United States after a year of work experience in a start-up in San Francisco.
In my opinion, reviewing her CV was not such a useful exercise.
Instead, I proposed meeting his daughter because I know from direct experience that although people will listen to their parents' opinion, they are keen to know what non-family members have to say. So, we had a meeting in which I listened to the young lady and offered her some concrete advice. Nothing major but I knew she would find it useful!
A short time after our meeting, her father sent me an email and we spoke on the phone. His daughter was satisfied with the meeting and wanted to meet me again.
Her father was happy to have found support for his daughter that was professional and, more importantly, distinct from what he could offer. He told me he wanted to pay for these services... Between you and me, it’s nice to see that some people still believe good work should be rewarded 😉
We continued with the career coaching sessions. The girl is smart and unafraid to get her hands dirty. Her father certainly loves her, but he’d rather have someone else - who also happens to be an expert in the field - support her.
Best wishes to all dads!
