How can your girlfriend help in the search for employment?
A while back, a woman who had heard about me contacted me by email. She wasn't entirely sure how she found me, perhaps, she saw my name when surfing the internet.
I ended up supporting her as a career coach in an interview process. After responding to a handful of targeted job listings, she was invited for initial and follow-up interviews … We carried out some career coaching sessions remotely via Skype. Soon enough, this woman - an engineer like myself who wanted a change of scenery because the company where she was working was no longer doing it for her - found a new professional opportunity and snapped it up. Wonderful!
This was also thanks to our sessions.
She wrote to me thrilled saying…
Hello Cristina, how are you? Happy New Year! I started working for the new company in December and am feeling very positive. It’s definitely much smaller than [redacted] and there is so much to do but my first impression is positive: they seem like easy going people! And the benefits aren’t bad either... Anyway, I’m contacting you because I finally convinced my boyfriend he also needs some support to change jobs :) To start with, he’d like to improve his CV and LinkedIn profile and if possible create a cover letter. I wanted to know if you can provide this type of service and, if so, how much it would be?

As this case demonstrates, a little push can always help. People are different and have different attitudes and opinions. But the important thing is to realise that in a world where nobody teaches you how to move around the labour market, perhaps it’s best to turn to the few people who have this type of knowledge and are dedicated to this mission!!
It’s also a part of my job to understand that people actually believe that when looking for a job a CV and LinkedIn profile, as well as ONE cover letter – i.e. one for all jobs! - is sufficient.
Things are actually a little more complicated, but it’s better to take the first step rather than being stuck in one place and doing nothing!
After all, part of a coach's mission is to make people more aware and self-sufficient when facing these challenges.
